Female Thinning Hair

When you’re styling your hair in the morning you may start to realize that your ponytails are getting thinner and thinner and so your automatic response is to panic.  The first thing that would go through most people’s minds would be “I am experiencing hair loss.”  Well, don’t panic right away because it might just be a case of thinning hair.  Zoe Draelos, M.D., clinical associate professor of dermatology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine states that “The diameter of the hair shaft diminishes as we get older.”  That basically means that you will have the same number of hair follicles, but your strands will become thinner which will make it look less voluminous.

As per Paul M. Friedman, M.D., clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, “Although 40 percent of women experience some hair loss by menopause, shedding around 100 strands a day is normal.”  So if you do end up seeing those few extra strands of hair in your hair brush or falling down the drain, don’t panic immediately because it might not be as bad as you think.

How You Can Disguise and Treat Your Female  Thinning Hair

There are a few tips and tricks that you can use to make your hair appear to be fuller or to even help prevent your hair from thinning any further.

1. Volumizing shampoos.

Volumizing shampoos allow our individual strands of hair to be thickened and you will want to look for a shampoo that has rice or wheat proteins in it.

2. No more maximum-hold hairsprays.

Considering that you are going to be trying to make your hair look fuller, you will want to stay away from products that will break your hair shaft even further.  Finding a flexible formula of hair spray that allows your hair to move freely will benefit you more than having that crunchy feeling in your hair.

3. Avoid tight hairstyles.

One major way that we break and damage our hair is by tying it in an elastic too tight or even using too many bobby pins at once.  You will want to decrease as much excess tension on your hair as possible to prevent any more breakage.

4. Disguise thinned areas.

When you are ready to style your hair, play around with it a little bit and see if you will be able to disguise any areas where you can see your thinning hair.  Try new hairstyles that don’t make your hair look as fragile.

Female thinning hair is far more common than hair loss considering that nearly 70 million American women experience thinning hair in their lifetime.  Luckily there are tips and tricks that you can use to your benefit if you are trying to make your hair appear to be more full and lush than ever before.  Thinning hair may be common but it can still have an emotional toll on a woman and so it is important that you try to prevent hair thinning as much as possible or find a way that you can cope with it with ease.
